Chapter Twelve

“I can't believe the things I did to you. I'm not here to say 'I'm sorry' over and over and I'm not gonna spit no game trying to get over. Girl I'm at your mercy, do what you will with me. Before you walk away, just listen. Wish I could press rewind and take away the pain"

-Sammie “Another Last Chance”

“Mere, voici ma copine. Elle s’appelle Rain,” Jah said, introducing Rain to his grandma. After noticing Rain faintly smile, he squeezed her hand. “Relax, ma,” he chuckled in her ear.

“You speak French?” Rain gasped. After extending her hand to Jahsir’s grandma, Rain laughed as Jahsir’s grandma pulled her into a hug.

“Yep,” Jah answered simply, popping the “p”. Watching Rain glare at him, Jah chose to ignore her and instead sat on the couch, bouncing Dashon on his knee as he tried to stick his foot in his mouth.

“You don’t think you could’ve told me that? It would be helpful to know that, you know?” Rain muttered, crossing her arms as she paced the room looking at pictures.

“Ma, you trippin’. I was born in L.A. My grandma’s from Haiti, so yeah, we grew up speaking French here. I’ll teach you French, ‘cause Brookie and the rest of our kids will grow up around here, speaking French… even Dashon,” Jah responded, softening his tone as he made faces at Baby D, who kicked his legs and began rambling, babbling baby noises. “See? He’s a fast learner, aren’t you man man?” Jah whispered, biting Dashon’s fingers playfully when he pulled on his lips.

Watching Jah and Baby D interact almost as father and son, Rain sighed. She could see Jahsir being around for a long time, but she was scared to give her heart away again. Except this time, Rain wasn’t so sure that she had a choice in the matter. This pregnancy, this child that her and Jah created, had her feeling emotional and in love. Listening to Jah and his grandma interact and speak in a language that she didn’t understand, Rain plastered a fake smile on her face, and walked around the room. Seeing Jah with a woman who looked just like him, and an almost-teenage girl that Rain assumed was Jazmine, Rain traced over another “replica” of Jah, an almost identical boy, who looked to be about four years older than him.

“Ma, Mama says that he’s gonna be a heart breaker with his gray eyes” Jah chuckled. Rain quickly snapped out of admiring the picture and brought her hands back down to her side. “Oh, and she knows you’re pregnant. She can smell it on you… she says she thinks we’re gonna have a boy,” Jah frowned. Rae ushered Jahsir into the kitchen while she held baby D and sang French lullabies to him while he tried to pull his socks off. When she heard the door unlock and open behind her, Rain turned around in curiosity.

“Je suis a la mansion!” the young woman yelled, announcing her presence.

“In here, Jazmine!” Jahsir screamed, smiling reassuringly at Rain, who smiled back faintly.
